The Senior Director, Data Management and Analysis works in the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and oversees Divisional data management, completeness, accuracy, rules and integrity. He/she and supervises a team of people and their day-to-day functions and performances dedicated to those functions. The Senior Director will develop, evaluate, and implement policies for core data business rules and appropriate usages consistent with Development industry standards and best practices. Additionally, he/she will play a leadership role in data integration projects and will develop and implement short- and long-range strategic action plans to sustain and improve the fundraising system infrastructure. He/she will identify vendors and software solutions to improve data quality and will work with Senior DAR IT leadership on the implementation, maintenance, and upgrades of these applications.The Senior Director ensures that core data is maintained and used consistently across Divisional reporting portals, according to documented definitions and standards. He/she is responsible for collaborating with DAR IT and all data stakeholders across the Division and University to ensure data needs are met and data is constructed, used and reported correctly. He/she collaborates with users to identify data gaps and irregularities and develops, prioritizes, and manages projects to address known issues.The Senior Director is expected to have a keen understanding of the business needs and processes of higher education and academic medical center fundraising. The Senior Director possesses a detailed knowledge of Blackbaud CRM (or similar fundraising CRM system) and a broad range of other software tools used in Development. The Senior Director should be able to set goals and solve problems in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Data Management team according to principles and practices that are generally considered to be best-in-class.
    • Manage and set priority for day-to-day work assignments, tasks and project completion.
    • Establish, monitor and report on workflow systems that support the timely completion of both routine and project-based tasks.
    • Recruit, interview, select, orient, train, mentor, coach and develop highly talented and qualified staff, and encourage appropriate levels of independence that support their professional growth.
    • Institute a customer service culture and consultative approach across the department and with campus partners. Ensure the Data Management team works with colleagues to understand business needs and works collaboratively and in partnership with stakeholders to solve problems.
    • Design constituent and demographic business rules and data integration processes oriented towards successful constituent engagement, solicitation and stewardship. Capture data necessary to understand a constituent's relationship with the University, how they have interacted with the University and create processes to ensure constituent communication preferences and restrictions are always honored.
    • Collaborate heavily with DAR IT, and Central IT when needed, to ensure data is accepted, constructed and reported on accurately. Provide input on the construction of warehouse data and participate in report requirement gathering and data validation to ensure data is used consistently and accurately across the Division and University.
    • Use query tools (e.g. SQL) to generate and analyze large datasets, with the objective of auditing and better understanding the quality and consistency of the data. Use the same tools and principles to assess and report on data completeness and accuracy analysis for key constituencies, including alumni, donors, parents, faculty/staff and grateful patients. Develop, prioritize and implement strategies to increase completeness and accuracy with an orientation toward engagement, solicitation and stewardship.
    • Serve as a trusted, knowledgeable source of information for decision-makers regarding current and best practices for data management. Understand the marketplace of data vendors and select and work with vendors to augment data gaps.
    • Provide leadership for training around data definitions for users, collaborating with Professional Development and Training to determine best practices for communicating concepts and definitions to the Division and other stakeholders.
    • Liaise with data brokers across the University to develop knowledge of data sources integrated into the Development database.Other Essential Competencies
      • Experience in complex systems with multi-segment development strategies, including experience with academic medical centers, HIPAA-compliant initiatives, and grateful patient programs.
      • Ability to analyze and review systems and operational procedures, identify problem areas, and optimize the environment to better align with fundraising needs is expected.
      • Possesses advanced technical and analytical skills, including software to create documents, spreadsheets, timelines, and reports that inform and support development programs.
      • Ability to learn, interpret, and apply various complex policies and procedures. The ability to share ideas and efficiently convey them is mandatory, as is the ability to work with other departments in the interpretation and enacting of these policies and procedures.QualificationsEducation, Training, and/or Experience Required:Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field plus at least seven years experience in the fields of Information Services, database administration, data integrity, or systems management, or equivalent in education, training and experience is required. Three to five years Oracle SQL or MySQL experience and Tableau experience are preferred. A Master's degree or relevant certifications are a plus. Familiarity with business processes of fundraising and constituent relations and/or direct experience with Blackbaud products and services are preferred.Other Skills and Abilities Required:Strong customer service and interpersonal communications skills, written and verbal, are required.
