Duties

The Bruce W Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center is looking for a Registered Nurse (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) SICU to work in the Nursing Service Critical Care area. The Critical Care Nurse is an experienced critical care nurse who has advanced knowledge and skill caring for patients that requires medical critical nursing care. This includes Hemodynamic monitoring with measurements of CO, PAD, PCWP and ABP as well as the management of the patient receiving CVVHD. The Critical Care nurse follows AACN standards of care and is BLS-ACLS certified.

The Critical Care RN utilizes the nursing process in the critical care arena. Identifies abnormal lab findings as well as subtle changes in patient condition collaborating with the medical team to promote positive outcomes. Provides total nursing care, monitors patients during procedures and administers pharmacological agents as prescribed by the Primary Team. Initiates lifesaving procedures during medical/cardiac emergencies and administers pharmacological agents per ACLS guidelines and documents all interventions including patient assessment, education and the prioritized plan of care for each patient.

Role models safe and effective practices, including: Appropriate use of safe patient handling equipment; Adherence to infection control practices while using equipment and providing patient care; Following established SOP's and checklists in the set-up; cleaning, transporting and storing reusable medical equipment (RME); Safely utilizes and maintain VA property and equipment.

Other duties include but are not limited to:


  • Coordinate with health care team members to evaluate, plan, and implement patient care plans
  • Prepare and administer (orally (PO), subcutaneously (SQ), intramuscular (IM) and/or intravenously (IV)) prescribed medications
  • Provide basic bedside care to include dressing changes, catheter care, assisting the patient with moving, and taking vital signs
  • Monitor patients for subtle or sudden changes in ventilation, renal, and cardiac status
  • Report adverse reactions to treatments or medication
  • Order, interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to assess a patient's condition
  • Quickly identify when a patient decompensates and alert the rest of the critical care team
  • Initiate corrective action when a patient displays adverse symptoms
  • Monitor and adjust specialized electronic equipment such as cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, oxygen, and IV pumps
  • Act as a patient advocate, by respecting the basic rights, beliefs, and values of the patient
  • Communicate essential and appropriate information about a patients' condition to family members and significant others Provide comfort and end-of-life care.
