Key Duties

  • Diagnosing cardiovascular conditions: A veterinary cardiologist is responsible for diagnosing heart conditions in animals, which includes examining the animal, conducting tests and interpreting results
  • Creating treatment plans: Once a cardiovascular condition has been diagnosed, a veterinary cardiologist will work with the animal's owner to create a treatment plan that is tailored to the animal's specific needs. This may involve medication, surgery, or a combination of both
  • Monitoring treatment: A veterinary cardiologist will regularly monitor the animal's condition throughout the course of treatment, making adjustments as necessary to ensure that the animal is responding appropriately

      • Strong educational background: A veterinary cardiologist must have a degree in veterinary medicine and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine
      • Specialized training in cardiology: After completing their degree in veterinary medicine, a veterinary cardiologist will undergo specialized training in cardiology, which includes a one-year internship followed by a three-year residency program in cardiology
      • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology: A veterinary cardiologist must have a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system in a wide range of animal species
      • Diagnostic skills: A veterinary cardiologist must be skilled in the use of diagnostic tests and equipment, including electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, and blood tests, to accurately diagnose cardiovascular conditions in animals
      • Communication skills: A veterinary cardiologist must be able to communicate effectively with animal owners and other veterinary professionals to ensure that the animal receives the best possible care
