Registered Nurse (Shift Supervisor) - Miami, Florida

The RN Supervisor is responsible for administrative, clinical, and clerical functions related to patient care during after hours, weekends, and holiday hours at the Miami VA. Provides administrative and clinical leadership for all interdisciplinary departments and staff of the Miami VA. Responsible for operational issues and oversight of employees making critical management decisions affecting the facility's complex operational processes. The RN Supervisor is responsible for the management of patient flow during weekend and holidays, and has authority to transfer a patient to a more appropriate level of care without the direct consent of the physician team involved in the care of the patient. As a member of the management team, the RN Supervisor performs a wide range of functions from daily operational activities through strategic management planning. The incumbent participates fully in leadership discussions, decisions, and policy making.

The RN Supervisor demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6). S/he is a proficient nurse who demonstrates proficiency in decision-making and using the nursing process for complex situations that effect performance outcomes at the point of care. Practice is enhanced through development of collegial relationships. S/he demonstrates collaboration by using the group process to solve problems. The focus is on leadership in strategically planning long-term goals for the microsystem (unit, team, or workgroup) that impacts operations or resources. The RN Supervisor demonstrates critical thinking with efficiency and accuracy in assessing and managing situations.

The RN Supervisor is responsible for delivery of quality patient care, including documentation, demonstration of clinical competence and continuous Quality Improvement Projects. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring compliance of established policies and procedures, and for administration of the unit/service, and VA policies. He/she works with Nurse Managers to identify and promote staff development and enhance staff competencies. Collaborates with the appropriate staff for initiatives for quality care and resource planning; collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in planning, directing and implementing patient care.

Other duties include but are not limited to:

  • Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work
  • Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates;
  • Evaluating the performance of subordinates
  • Making recommendations for appointments
  • advancements or reassignments of subordinates
  • Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters
  • Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level nurse managers and service chiefs
  • Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate
  • Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training (VA Handbook 5007, Part III, Chapter 8)
