opportunity for a Toxicologist 1 in the Department of Pathology
located in Miami, Florida.The Toxicologist 1 performs scientific
tests on bodily fluids and tissue samples to identify the presence
of any drugs or chemicals in the body. Moreover, the Toxicologist 1
analyzes and evaluates statistical data in furtherance of the

- Analyzes and performs examinations on evidence to detect and
quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, or other controlled substances
using chemical techniques.
- Performs housekeeping tasks including maintaining laboratory
supplies and reference materials.
- Assists in the inventory, maintenance, storage, and disposition
of evidence.
- Performs basic maintenance on gas and liquid chromatography
instrumentation.
- Supports efforts to summarize toxicological literature.
- Enters data into databases and prepares reports on observed and
recorded effects.
- Uses state-of-the-art chemical and biomedical
instrumentation.
- Serves as liaison to the courts and other external agencies by
providing expert witness testimony.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures
and safeguards University assets.This list of duties and

experienceDepartment Specific FunctionsThis is the journey-level
class where toxicologist works with greater independence and may
participate in training laboratory technicians. - The toxicologist
has primary responsibility for operating the toxicology laboratory
and for performing tests in routine, complicated, unusual, or
debated cases by utilizing GC and LC-MS-MS, HS-GC, ELISA, SPE, and
LLE techniques. - The toxicologist position also requires
experience in forensic toxicology laboratory practices such as
chain of custody, an FDLE and clinical license is desirable but not
mandatory, and instrumentation troubleshooting capabilities. - The
casework, all results, and reports are reviewed by the toxicologist
and supervisor/director.Job requirements1. Thorough knowledge of
physical and analytical chemistry as it applies to the field of
forensic science.2. Analyzes and performs examinations on evidence
to detect and quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, or other
controlled substances using instrumental, chemical, techniques,
including (but not limited to), gas and liquid chromatography, mass
spectrometry, Enzyme-Linked-Immunosorbent-Assay (ELISA).3. Thorough
knowledge of the principles, practices, instruments, and methods
used in drug and toxicology analysis as applied to the collection
and analysis of criminal evidence.4. Thorough knowledge of
laboratory techniques, analysis, and procedures, including various
types of spectroscopy, chromatography, spectrometry, and ELISA.5.
Ability to explain laboratory analysis, instrumental techniques,
procedures, and theories in a clear and concise manner so that
non-scientists may understand the significance of the results
obtained using these procedures6. Ability to communicate
effectively, both orally and in writing.7. Ability to prepare and
deliver legal testimony accurately and be cross-examined and remain
composed in court.8. Ability to apply scientific procedures,
methodology, and formulas to assigned work.9. Provides independent
routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.Education Requirements
for Toxicologist: Graduation from a college or university with a
Bachelor Degree in a natural science, a forensic science, an
engineering science, or criminalistics, including or supplemented
by at least twelve (12) credit hours in chemistry at the graduate
or undergraduate level, and 1-5 years of full-time experience in a
toxicology laboratory conducting toxicology analysis. -A clinical
license in the field of clinical chemistry is desirable but not
mandatory.Knowledge, skills, and ability; 1. - Requires knowledge
of basic statistical methods and procedures.2. Requires thorough
knowledge of laboratory techniques used to perform the scientific
examination of biological samples3. Requires knowledge regarding
chain of custody, state, federal and local laws and regulations3.
Requires ability to maintain and establish satisfactory working
relationships with coworkers, various law enforcement personnel,
and legal system personnel4. - Requires knowledge of scientific
research methods and procedures as it relates to the position5.
Requires knowledge/ ability to learn various software applications
such as ChemStation -, Masshunter - FileMaker Pro, Microsoft
office.6. Must be proficient in instrument maintenance and
