The department of Health Information Management (HIM) has an
exciting opportunity for a Full Time Outpatient Coder to work at
the UHealth Campus. The Outpatient Coder reviews the clinical
documentation contained in medical records to accurately assign and
sequence diagnostic and procedural codes to outpatient medical
records for use in reimbursement and data collection.
Verifies patient information to identify any documentation or
report discrepancies.
Ensures quality of scanned documents and reports any issues to
managing staff.
Assesses documentation and reaches out to physicians for additional
information when information for proper coding is missing or
incomplete.
Converts documented clinical information into applicable diagnostic
and procedure codes.
Assigns codes to outpatient records for use in reimbursement and
data collection.
Complies with policies and procedures, and maintains patient
records confidential.
Reports unusual circumstances, possible risk factors, errors, and
discrepancies to management.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and
safeguards University assets.

Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Certified Coding Professional RHIA or RHIT Certified
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
General knowledge of office procedures and operations.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written
form.
Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to
detail.
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures and
principles.
Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data.
Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may
be considered.
