The Electrician in the Department of Theatre Arts organizes the information from the lighting design drawings to determine the most efficient way to hang and focus lighting instruments for each production. The successful candidate will lead a student crew in the hanging and focusing of the lighting instruments, troubleshoot the lighting system for each production, communicate with the lighting designers to ensure that implementation of the lighting design is consistent with expectations, estimate time and money necessary for implementation of lighting designs and communicate these needs to the Production Manager.

The successful candidate attends all technical and dress rehearsals and programs the lighting console during these rehearsals, conducts dimmer and system checks (and troubleshoots if necessary) on performance days, fixes any issues with the lighting system included on JHRT performance reports, leads the student crew in the removal of lighting instruments at the end of each run at the JHRT and attends all production meetings.

Department Specific Functions

  • Responsible for implementing the lighting design for a production from the lighting design drawings.
  • Supervises and is responsible for the student crews working on any construction or installation project.
  • Oversees the preparation, hanging, connection and focusing of stage lighting fixtures for each production.
  • Responsible for inventory, repair and maintenance of all lighting fixtures, cables, effects, power distribution, dimmers, networking and lighting control consoles.
  • Recommends purchasing of all consumables including color gels, gobos, gaffer tape, etc.
  • Planning and implementing of the cabling (circuiting) of lights and electric power distribution.
  • Documenting and tracking of all circuiting, addressing, and system configuration in cooperation with the Technical Director.
  • Patching assignments of the control console based on the paperwork generated by the lighting designer and the planned circuiting.
  • Occupational safety and health of workers and operational decisions as the head of the electrics department.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:

    High School diploma or equivalent

    Experience:

    Minimum 1 year of relevant experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

    Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
    • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
    • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
